Hybrid vehicles are a combination of a gas and an electric powered vehicle all in one car. This is why it is so much more fuel efficient. Most of the around town driving is done on the electric portion of the power, while longer driving and higher speeds is powered by the gas engine.
The standard maintenance recommendations performed in a gas engine car still apply. For a hybrid car oil changes, spark plug replacement, belt replacements, coolant services, transmission services, standard battery services and replacement, differential services, transfer case services, brake services, wiper blade replacement, suspension and door lubrication services, tire rotations, tire replacements, and wheel alignments still all need to be performed.
The 12-volt battery operates the electrical solenoids to connect the high voltage battery to the propulsion system or electric motors inside the transaxle. The 12-volt battery also operates the control modules, abs control modules, body control modules, power door locks and windows, power steering and lighting systems.
The hybrid battery needs to be tested and inspected regularly. This hybrid battery also has an air blown cooling system to keep it cool, some of these are equipped with a hybrid battery air filter that needs to be replaced on an annual basis. There is an inverter that is not in gas engines that runs coolant through it that will need to be flushed/serviced regularly. It is recommended to perform that service whenever the engine coolant is getting serviced.
