Weather plays a huge role in your ability to drive a vehicle safely. Our insurance company just released statistics that 1 in every 6 accidents is caused by weather conditions. By allowing for weather conditions, prepping the vehicle, and driving appropriately for winter conditions, many car accidents could be avoided.
PRECIPITATION
Precipitation, which we see a lot of in the northwest, can badly reduce visibility, for you and other drivers.
Precipitation also makes it harder to stop, especially if it has not rained in a while and the buildup of oils on the roads makes them even slicker. Driving slower and leaving more distance than usual between your car and the one in front of you, will help give you more time to get stopped or avoid a panic stop situation.
VEHICLE MAINTENANCE
Keeping your vehicle in good running order is also important. Good tires, proper alignment, a good suspension system, a clean windshield with effective wiper blades, and properly working exterior and interior lights will help with visibility, vehicle control, and traction.
EMERGENCY KIT
Be prepared by keeping your gas tank above the half-full mark and keep a cell phone with a charger in the car. Invest in a basic road emergency kit, with flares, jumper cables, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and some of the basics needed for a breakdown or accident situation.
Keep practicing safe driving habits, especially during adverse weather, and always maintain your vehicle to keep it in top running shape, fueled up, and ready to go.
Happy Motoring!
