Weather can play a huge role in operating a vehicle safely. Ever since the rain started this fall, it seems like all we see and hear about are car accidents. By allowing for weather conditions, and driving appropriately for those conditions many car accidents could be avoided.
For instance, precipitation, which we see a lot of in the northwest can badly reduce visibility, for you and other drivers. This precipitation also makes it harder to stop, especially if it has not rained in awhile, there is a build up of oils on the roads which makes them even slicker. Driving slower and leaving more distance than usual between your car and the one in front of you, will help give you more time to get stopped or avoid a situation if needed.
Keeping your vehicle in good running order is also really important. Good tires, a clean windshield with wiper blades that really clear your windshield, exterior and interior lights all working properly, will help with visibility. Simple things to help be prepared are keeping your gas tank above the half full mark, keep a cell phone in the car with a charger to keep it charged. It would also be wise to invest in a basic road emergency kit, with flares, jumper cables, a flashlight, a first aid kit and some of the basics needed in a breakdown or accident situation.
Keep practicing safe driving habits, especially during adverse weather and always maintain your vehicle to keep it in top running shape, fueled up and ready to go! Steve and Karen Johnston are owners of All About Automotive in Historic Downtown Gresham.
